Keys to Success: Shaunell Payne’s Inspiring Journey with the Ways to Work Program

We’re thrilled to share another heartwarming story! Last week, Ms. Shaunell Payne, one of our residents, picked up the keys to her new car, thanks to the support she received from the Ways to Work Program through the HumanKind Economic Resource Center!

Shay is an inspiring single mom who works tirelessly in the medical field. Over the past few years, she faced numerous car troubles, often dealing with unhelpful dealerships and sky-high interest rates. Despite these challenges, she remained determined. At times, Shay had to borrow vehicles from family members just to get to work, take her child to school, and attend necessary appointments.

When she learned about the “Ways to Work” program at the Roanoke EnVision Center, she saw an opportunity and wasted no time. Even with long hours at her job and the demands of being a mother, she stayed on top of her paperwork and ensured everything was submitted quickly. Her diligence paid off—in just 17 business days, she went from submitting her documents to driving away in her own car.

With her packed schedule, Shay managed to take only one day off for her child’s birthday. Through careful planning, she used that day to close on her loan, attend the required financial class, pick up her new vehicle, and surprise her child by picking them up in her own car for the first time!

For Shay, this achievement wasn’t just about having a vehicle—it symbolized the freedom to provide for her family, get to work, and make lasting memories. Her dedication and perseverance turned a difficult situation into a story of triumph, showing that with hard work and determination, success is always within reach!
