But what exactly is public housing?
RRHA’s public housing program is a rental assistance program governed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The program provides housing assistance to low-income families in multifamily and some scattered site single-family dwellings, owned and operated by RRHA.
Under the public housing program, eligible applicants apply at the site where they want to live. Families pay 30% of their adjusted annual income as rent or they may choose a flat rent.
Public housing units range in size from efficiency to 5-bedroom apartments. Apartment size is determined by the number of family members who will live in the unit. Handicap accessible apartments are available for both families and individuals.
Each development offers a number of amenities for young and old to enjoy. Our family developments feature playground equipment, activity centers, picnic tables and shelters, and washer hook-ups in each apartment, as well as a variety of on-site recreational and educational programs. Day care centers operated by Total Action Against Poverty are located in three of our seven family developments.
RRHA’s two high-rise buildings offer independent living to elderly and disabled individuals and couples. The high-rises provide on-site social activities, craft and game rooms, a library, community rooms for special programs, and laundry facilities on each floor.
